One Man Submarine Ride

A short version. The full article is on LinkedIn.

Six weeks after I was laid off, at 61, I still hadn’t sent a single résumé. I’d been building instead.

This is the most honest thing I’ve written in a while. It’s about a long walk, a John Mayer song about a man who builds a one-man submarine in his basement while everyone tells him he’s crazy, and the thing I’d somehow forgotten in all the years of meetings and code reviews: I’m a builder. Not was. Am.

The submarine might sink. I might get pulled back into a leadership role, and honestly that wouldn’t be failure either. But right now the hatch is closed, the sea is quiet, and I still have time. This is also where the name SubmarineTest comes from.
